Castles of North Ayrshire: Lochranza Castle

We have added another castle to our ‘Castles of North Ayrshire‘ section and this time it is Lochranza Castle!

Lochranza Castle sits in the north of Arran, on a peninsula at Loch Ranza. The castle dates from the 13th century when it was likely built for the MacSween family and it would play a role in different important events in Scottish history such as:

  • It is believed that Robert the Bruce landed at Lochranza Castle in 1306 upon his return from Ireland in order to claim the Scottish throne.
  • James IV used the castle in his campaign again the Lord of the Isles in the 1490’s.

The castle was even the model for the castle in ‘The Adventures of Tintin‘ comic ‘The Black Island‘.
