Object Name: Glasgow High School Art Medal
Description:
Art medal presented to George D. Guthrie in 1911 as dux in art, 5th modern, at the High School of Glasgow. Donated to the school by H. Newbury, FRA, it was made by Francis McNair and Wylie Davidson.
It is a square medal plain on one side and inscribed on the other. The inscribed face is decorated in the Art Deco style with a hand, leaves, a burning torch and a stylised representation of the Glasgow City coat of arms.
George D. Guthrie was one of several artists working in Saltcoats in the first half of the 20th century. They formed an association called the Society of Six and exhibited under that title several times.
