Object Name: Navigation Light Tripod

Description:

Tripod used to support navigational light on the Outer Eilean Island, off Millport Bay. Restored by the apprentices of the South of Scotland Electricity Board in 1987, through Mr Robert Forsythe. It is now part of the collection of the Museum of the Cumbraes.

The tripod is made of iron and consists of three legs each having a hook on their inside edges. At the apex of the legs is another hook which held the navigation light. The lantern was attached by chains to the three hooks, to anchor it against strong winds.

The Outer Eilean Island gives shelter to anchorage within Millport Bay but was also a hazard to shipping in the dark. The tripod's navigation light helped sea-farers to find a safe passage into the bay. The island was also used at one time as a stone quarry and was larger than seen today.
