Object Name: Irvine Town Drum
Description:
Irvine burgh council town drum dating to the eighteenth century. Used to attract the attention of the townspeople when the council wanted to make a proclamation.
The drum is circular with red bans at top and bottom stretching the leather skins. It is kept taut by ten rope and leather extensions and decorated with brass studs.
The drum was also used to drum undesirables out of town. The most famous occurrence of this in Irvine was in 1784 when the infamous Buchanite sect were ejected by the town council.
