Object Name: Millport Centenary Medal
Description: Medal cast in 1964 to commemorate one hundred years of Millport's burgh status. It was owned by a family in Millport before being donated to the Museum of the Cumbraes. It is now part of the museum's collection.
One side is a representation of the Millport crest; star fish and scallops. On the reverse the wording, "Millport Centenary Year 1864 - 1964, Provost Farquar G Roberts, Convenor Margaret MacRae, Centenary Queen Joan Ferguson, Crowned by Mrs R G Roberts".
Millport gained burgh status due to the efforts of the sixth Earl of Glasgow. It was commemorated in 1964 by crowning a centenary queen. The crowning has since become an annual event in the town. Such ceremonies were popular in towns throughout Scotland.
