Object Name: Saltcoats Queen of the Sea Crown

Description:

This is the original crown, worn by all Sea Queens until the 1960s. The crown is now over eighty years old and even though it was only used in the crowing of 21 Queens, it is in a very delicate condition. It is currently part of the Sea Queen collection held by The Heritage Centre.

The Saltcoats ‘Queen of the Sea’ was first crowned in 1928, to coincide with the towns quarter centenary; the original “Monarch” was a young Miss Netta Duff. The festival was a hit with the Saltcoats locals and it soon became an annual event. From 1936 to 1949 the festival was postponed, it restarted in 1950 and again stopped in 1964, it wasn’t until the turn of the millennium that the local council decided to bring back the festival. Since 2000 the Queen of Sea Festival has attracted hundreds of visitors each year and looks set to be a permanent feature on the local calendar for years to come.
