Description: The apron which belonged to the Chief Ranger of the Saltcoats, Ayrshire, branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters. It was used by successive Chief Rangers and is now part of the collection of the North Ayrshire Museum.

Made of blue linen edged with red silk fringes, the apron is embroidered with images of a white dove of peace with a flower in its beak, three sets of flowers, two potted plants and a large thistle. It is backed with red silk and has two red silk tie strings.

The Ancient Order of Foresters were a friendly society founded in Yorkshire in 1745. In 1790 they opened their 'Number One Court' in Leeds. The first Forester was said to have been Adam. They differed from other friendly societies in opening their membership to the poorer sections of society.
