Object Name: Christening Robe - Ayrshire Needlework

Description: This is a splendid example of the internationally famous Ayrshire whitework. It was hand-made in Saltcoats and would have taken about two weeks to finish.

The christening gown is decorated with wheat sheaves, flowers, fronds and leaves. The triangular point of the bodice as worn outside if being used by a baby boy and inside if a girl.

Ayrshire needlework, as it is more properly known, started at the end of the 18th century. It was devised by Mrs Jamieson of Ayr based on a French baby robe belonging to Lady Mary Montgomerie.
