Object Name: Duchess of Hamilton Life Belt

Description:

A life belt made by Messers William Denny & Bros., Dumbarton. It was used on the River Clyde turbine steamer Duchess of Hamilton. When the steamer was decommissioned it became the property of a Millport resident who later donated it to the Museum of the Cumbraes.

The life belt is made of cork to make it buoyant and covered in canvas to weatherproof it. The canvas is painted red and white It is entwined with rope handles. On both side of the life belt it is stencilled 'Duchess of Hamilton Glasgow'.

The Duchess of Hamilton was built in 1932 by Harland & Wolff, Govan, Glasgow. The turbine steamer was part of the Caledonian Steam Packet Company Limited and powered by triple direct-drive turbine engines. She operated on the Firth of Clyde until being withdrawn in 1972.
