Object Name: Jean Armour's Teapot

Description:

A teapot once the possession of Jean Armour, wife of Robert Burns. Made about 1810, it was owned for a period by Mrs Duncan of Saltcoats. It was donated to, and is now part of the collection of, the North Ayrshire Museum.

A square shaped pot with a lid. There are handles on both lid and pot. It is decorated with blue flowers, trees, birds and butterflies on an off-white background. Inside there are holes to strain tea leaves before the tea enters the spout.

Jean Armour was born in 1765 the daughter of James Armour, a wealthy master mason and contractor. Jean married the world's most popular poet, Robert Burns in 1788 in Mauchline, Ayrshire. She died in 1834 in Dumfries.
