Description:
A children's toy originally purchased by Dr. Marshall on the Isle of Bute about 1900. It was used by the doctor's family for many years before being presented to the Museum of the Cumbraes.
The horse is in the traditional dapple-grey style with red/brown leather tack comprising; bridle, reins, saddle and stirrups. It sits on a wooden stand and rocks on metal hinges. The rocking horse's mane is made of real horse hair.
One of Dr. Marshall's daughters, Sheina, who died in 1977, was a marine biologist with a worldwide reputation for her work on plankton. She worked for many years in the Scottish Marine Biological Association Marine Station on Cumbrae.
