Doors Open Day in Ayrshire takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September, a chance to explore as many buildings as you can, some of which are not normally open to the public. All are free entry.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will highlight some of the North Ayrshire buildings that are opening their doors that weekend to welcome you. Make a day of it in North Ayrshire!
First up we have SKELMORLIE SECRET BUNKER, comprising of the Royal Observer Corps underground monitoring post manned until 1991. Its primary function was to monitor and report on the effects of a nuclear attack and was part of a chain throughout the United Kingdom. This is the only fully restored post in the West of Scotland for public access and is accessible by climbing down a 15 foot vertical ladder. Above ground there is a fully equipped replica monitoring post and a small museum.
Booking is essential due to the restricted space underground.
