ARDROSSAN FEVER HOSPITAL

The Ardrossan Fever Hospital opened in 1876 on the corner of Sorbie Road and Parkhouse Road (across from Ardrossan Academy.) Originally the hospital was administered by a committee of management representatives from the Old Parochial Board and Ardrossan Town Council.  In 1885 when Saltcoats became a Police Burgh, representatives from Saltcoats Town Council were included in its management.  In 1895 the 2 Councils purchased the hospital from the Parochial Board.

By the 1960s the building had been taken over by the Electricity Board.  Recently the Vauxhall car dealership occupied the site of the old Fever Hospital.

ARDROSSAN & SALTCOATS JOINT HOSPITAL

As the populations of Ardrossan and Saltcoats grew the Ardrossan Fever hospital became too small.  The decision was taken to build a new larger hospital on land purchased between McGillivray Avenue and Saughtree Avenue in Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Joint Hospital opened on 15 February 1901.  In 1914 the Joint hospital was accidently burnt down and was re-opened on 30 June 1923.  In 1929 the Joint Hospital was taken over by Ayr County Council and continued to be used until Ayr County Central Hospital in Irvine opened its Infectious Diseases wards in 1941 replacing the small fever hospitals spread across Ayrshire.  The maternity section later opened in 1944.

LA MISERECORDE CONVENT OF THE NURSING SISTERS

During World War One, the Red Cross opened the Ardrossan Auxiliary Hospital at 9 South Crescent, Ardrossan.

During World War Two, the Franciscan Sisters moved into 9 South Crescent, Ardrossan following the bombing of Misrecorde House, London.  No. 10 South Crescent housed wounded soldiers and Belgian refugees.  At the end of the war the Franciscan Sisters returned to London after Misrecorde House was repaired. After the war the Sisters of Misrecorde approached the Archbishop of Glasgow with a view to setting up a convent in Ardrossan.  In May 1947 the sisters set up Saint Theresa’s House convent at No. 10 South Crescent, Ardrossan.  Mother Vincent Ferrier was the first Mother Superior.  In 1977 the Convent was sold and the Sisters moved into a smaller house in Irvine.  In 1983 they left Scotland and returned to the Mother House in France.
