On Friday 4th August 1950, the British Legion (England) Touring Team visited Ardeer Recreation Bowling Club, Stevenston, where they played a three-rink game on Ardeer Rec’s bowling green against the British Legion (Scottish Areas) Team with the Scottish side winning by 26 shots.

The event was organised by the National Sports Committee of the British Legion.  Mr T. C. Hamilton, chairman of the Ayrshire Area Council took care of the local arrangements, with catering being arranged by the Ardeer Recreation Club.

The British Legion (Scottish Areas) Team consisted of players from Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Glasgow and Western Counties, and the Highlands and Islands.  The Ayrshire team players were R. Boyd (Ardeer Recreation); H. Thomson (Ardeer Recreation) and A. Adrain (Irvine Winton).

Upon their arrival at the Ardeer Recreation Clubhouse, the English team were greeted by the ‘skirl of the pipes’ and were officially welcomed by Major General Sir James Syme Drew, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.O., M.C., D.L., who was the chairman of the British Legion (Scotland).

During lunch, a toast was made to the King by Mr T. C. Hamilton, followed by speeches from Dr McDavid on behalf of Nobel I.C.I. and from Major General Sir James Syme Drew.
