George Burley was born in Cumnock, East Ayrshire, and went on to enjoy a distinguished career in football as both a player and manager.

He earned 11 caps for Scotland and was part of the squad at the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He would also manage the national team, being appointed Scotland manager in 2008

At club level, Burley made over 500 appearances for Ipswich Town between 1973 and 1985, playing a key role in their FA Cup triumph in 1978 and UEFA Cup victory in 1981. He made his debut for the club in 1973, against Manchester United at Old Trafford, with the job of marking George Best!

He later moved into management, including a spell as player-manager of Ayr United from 1991 to 1993. In 2008, he was appointed Scotland manager, though his tenure was short-lived, winning three of 14 matches before his departure in 2009.
