Have you heard the story of the sinking of the paddle steamship ‘Chusan’ at Ardrossan?
It occurred on the 21st of October, 1874 and saw both the captain and 16 crewmen die. Sailing from Ireland, the ship was caught in a horrid storm and was dashed on the Crinan Rock just 50 yards from the pier head, splitting in two.
Remarkably, the captain’s heavily pregnant wife, Harriet, survived the disaster and gave birth to twin sons just two months later.
There is a monument to the ship and crew in Ardrossan Cemetery.
