Christopher Meadows

We’re delighted to have a small selection of Christopher Meadows’ paintings in our collection.  Here’s a brief biography of the artist. 

Christopher Meadows was born in Hungarton, Leicestershire in late 1862. He was the youngest child of John Meadows and Frances Parker (John’s second wife, married in 1845).  John was a shoemaker/cordwainer.  

Meadows moved to Scotland to live with his older brother, Robert, when he was around sixteen and attended Aberdeen University.  He had moved to Glasgow by 1883 and both he and Robert exhibited paintings in the annual exhibitions of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art.  

In 1891 Meadows married Ada Judd at St John’s Church in Johnstone, and they had a son, Robert, who sadly died at the age of two.  They had a daughter, Frances Daisy, in 1898. 

By 1900 the family had moved to Hazelwood in Saltcoats and Meadows became a member of a group of artists called ‘’The Society of Six”, the other members being George G. Guthrie, Albert Beard, Tom Gilfillan, C H Lilley and R Clouston-Young. 

They moved to Argyll Road and expanded their family with 5 more children, who grew up to attend Ardrossan Academy. 

Meadows moved with his wife to Norgrove in Largs, where he died on 4th September 1947.
