Japan surrendered to the Allies on the 15th of August, 1945. This day became known as ‘VJ Day’ (Victory Over Japan Day) effectively ending the Second World War. Japan signed surrender documents on the 2nd of September, officially ending the Second World War and bringing to an end a conflict that had raged for years and had seen over 100 million people dead.
As with the European Theatre, people from North Ayrshire were caught up in the conflict, many of whom ended up as prisoners of war under Japanese control. This page serves as a memorial to those who were held captive, many of whom were starved, tortured and murdered. Some were lucky enough to be able to return home to their loved ones.
